Volunteers from Global Village Connect are in the village of Buyanga, delivering Peace Flags and tie dying with the students there. They're also working on letters to send back to their pen pals, checking in on the health of the farm, and strategizing with students about ways we can work together to try to meet some of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Our deepest gratitude to the Global Village volunteers who are facilitating our partnership with Buyanga Primary School. May we all be healthier and happier for investing in this friendship!

This is pure joy. Radnor Middle School students are capturing something meaningful they've learned and putting this on fabric flags that will hang in classrooms at Buyanga Primary School.

The teachers at Buyanga are incredible, but they have almost no resources beyond a very tired chalkboard for teaching their students. However, the Peace Flags are durable and educational.

Radnor Pen Pals created flags with the 5 Themes of Geography; diagrams of volcanoes, flowers, the water cycle; math equations and multiplication and addition tables; scientific terminology and favorite words of wisdom. They are made by hand and with love, and it's a beautiful way to capture some of what they're learning and sharing it with others.

This is the season for gratitude and for giving. While you and your family are planning meaningful gifts, kindly consider a contribution to the Buyanga School farm. The Pen Pal & Popcorn Club specializes in sustaining relationships and sharing the best of our selves with our friends far away. When you contribute to this project, you are able to follow the progress of this farm for years to come through this blog. When you make a contribution through Global Village Connect, you will receive a gift card acknowledging the donation. Really, what could be more meaningful than nourishing our pen pals for years to come? As always, thank YOU for giving! Here's the link to donate: Buyanga Farm Donation

It's hard to imagine that one haunted house full of 100 zombies could could cultivate a farm that feeds hundreds of students in one school far away, but these are no ordinary zombies...they are also pen pals with hearts that never die. Here are some highlights from our Halloween fundraiser. Next time we'll share pictures of our sister school in Uganda and show you how our efforts are impacting the world.

As we celebrate Thanksgiving in our community, I want to thank everyone who participated in our haunted house, whether you played a role on stage, backstage, or you visited our haunted house and enjoyed some of Abuelita's incredible empanadas, you were a critical part of this event. Thank you to everyone in this community who understands how gratifying it can be to give to others all around the globe.
Radnor Pen Pal & Popcorn Club has had a little hiatus, but while we were focusing our energy on school and our own well-being, the new farm we initiated this year has been carefully tended by the students and faculty of the Buyanga Primary School under the supervision of organic farming expert Yusuf Wesonga. Our haunted house fundraiser at Halloween enabled Buyanga Primary to plant 550 apple-banana trees, and the ground has been prepared for 4 acres of maize and other vegetables that will provide the school with the food they need to initiate a lunch program.

While the eastern region of Africa has been stricken with drought conditions that have led to food scarcity issues, Global Village Connect volunteer Michael Glotter worked alongside Yusuf Wesonga to teach the students how to create an irrigation system using plastic drink bottles. This has been a successful method and almost all of the banana crop has survived the initial months since planting.

Now the school is preparing to develop the remaining 4 acres after some highly anticipated rains during the first week of March. Our haunted house funds will cover the initial planting, but we will need to redouble our efforts to ensure that the school farm thrives and can generate a profit. Making Buyanga Primary School self-sufficient is our goal, and we anticipate that as the lunch program evolves, school enrollment and retention rates will rise, much as they did for our first pen pals at the nearby Buppala Primary School. Keeping kids well nourished and in school are the primary goals of our work in Uganda. This is only possible because Radnor pen pals and our families and friends have recognized that a little bit of love and compassion goes a long way. Kindly consider helping us help others by making a small donation through our partners at Global Village Connect.

I am bursting with pride and excitement to share this update from Michael Glotter, our Global Village Connect representative, who has been in Uganda helping to initiate the work on the garden Radnor pen pals have made possible. Gang, YOU are agents of change, making a better life not only possible, but an absolute given for the thousands of students who will attend Buyanga Primary School for years to come. This is living proof that sustainable solutions to food scarcity are so doable. Who would guess that creating a haunted house and a community bake sale could be the beginning of so much opportunity for so many students in a village so far away? Thank you for being compassionate global citizens with hearts of gold. Let's do all we can to keep the love and good will growing.
Seeing and hearing our pen pals somehow makes the connection so much more real. Students prepared questions, and the Ugandan students were curious about our lives, as well. When asked what they dream of being when they grow up, they responded that they wanted to become doctors and engineers and teachers. Then each of our students came up one by one, introduced themselves and said what they dream of becoming.
Radnor Middle School pen pals have earned $2,500 from the haunted house and from a bake sale, pictured here. Below are photos of the site selection and the beginning of the garden that will make it possible for every child at Buyanga to have lunch each day he or she attends school. Our last school garden is going strong and sustaining the daily lunch at Buppala School, and soon, many more students will be able to rely on a healthy lunch every day. After it was all over, counting our profits was a whole other cause for celebration. We raised $2000 from this event. That's enough to build 4 acres of garden at Buyanga Primary School in Uganda!

Join us at Pen Pal & Popcorn Club on Thursday where we will look at what a $2000 investment can yield in Uganda. There will be lots of popcorn and plenty to celebrate. We are truly making the world a healthier, more equitable place.
It's a new year with new faces, new teachers and new experiences. And while going back to school is a jolt to the system, it's also an incredible opportunity to start fresh and refocus on what matters most. This year, my focus is on developing a global perspective. While the Pen Pal Project that has evolved over the past seven years has been transformational, this year my commitment to developing a global mindset is moving front and center.
I am honored to have been selected by the US Dept. of State as a Teacher for Global Classrooms for this school year. This means I will be studying best practices for integrating global awareness into my classroom, and I will also travel abroad for a couple of weeks as a teacher-ambassador in the Spring or Summer of 2017. This is one of those rare and special moments when I get to connect our students with children in another part of the world. I can't think of anything more thrilling.
While making new friends is always exciting, the joy of maintaining a friendship over a long period of time brings tremendous rewards and sometimes challenges. Sustaining our friendship with the Buppala School in Uganda, and expanding our reach to the Buyanga School where our friend and headmaster has been transferred will take persistent effort. Our garden and goat projects continue to deliver to the community, and this year we will begin to try and replicate some of the success we've enabled at Buppala to the nearby Buyanga Primary School. We welcome anyone who is able to join us after school on Thursdays. If you have any desire to participate in any capacity, please let me know. There is so much to learn and accomplish. May this be our best year yet!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15779489829207500095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8162232991041043094.post-11287753159399780122016-05-05T10:35:00.002-04:002016-05-05T10:43:42.856-04:00Pen Pals Send Peace Flags to Liberia!

Radnor Pen Pals have been working steadily for the past several weeks on a series of instructional and decorative Peace Flags to adorn the classroom of our student teacher, Ms. Caitlin Baker, who is about to embark on a two-year adventure as a Peace Corps volunteer in Liberia. Creating Peace Flags with math formulas, health facts, science concepts, proverbs, poetry & tie dye is a way of providing Visual Literacy for students who have little access to books, posters or media images. And expanding our reach to classrooms in Liberia makes our global connection even stronger. Radnor students had a brief introduction to Liberia earlier this year when our very own Mr. Bennie shared his experience as a Liberian refugee. We look forward to communicating with Ms. Baker's students in the near future.

Having recently returned from Uganda, I wanted to just share this photo and update you on the garden that you helped make possible with our Environmental Education Grant from 2014 entitled “Lessons in Sustainability: Learn, Practice, Teach & Share.” The grant gave Radnor students an opportunity to learn about sustainable gardening and best practices while our partner school in Uganda was able to apply similar lessons through the installation of a school garden. I am happy to report that the garden SCA made possible at Buppala Primary School has been transformative. As a result of this garden, the school is sustaining a lunch delivery program to the 600 pupils in and immediately surrounding the school, and this past season they generated a profit from the apple-banana crop (pictured in the photo), providing funds to pay for laborers to help weed, and to reinvest in the development of the maize, cassava & bean portion of the garden. As you can see, the plants are thriving. It is mind-blowing to recall the bare stalks that we planted less than two years ago that are now producing abundant hands of bananas to nourish the school and replenish the garden. While the pineapple crops did not fare as well, the school is expanding the banana crop, and the student population is clearly benefiting from our investment.

My most recent trip to Buppala included the delivery of 50 goats to students in our sister school. Hopefully, this will continue to improve the health and well-being of the children in this remote village. It is our intention to monitor the progress and measure the impact of our investment. I am grateful to SCA for having made this worthy investment and I hope we have an opportunity to collaborate again in the future. Thank you for caring about kids and for your generosity towards Radnor Middle School and Buppala Primary School

Traveling in Uganda fills me with so much joy and gratitude, and holding on to that is always a challenge. Since returning to Radnor, I make a point to walk slowly. Verrrrry slowwwwwly, like people walk in Uganda. It forces me to notice my surroundings, and it makes me feel calmer and more connected to my environment. It's easier to remember to breathe when I slow my pace down, and the signs all over our building are another helpful reminder.

Sharing my journey with my students and with the pen pals is a great honor, and sharing the pictures that Buppala students captured is another reason to pause and wonder. The photos that Mususwa George took are full of energy and life. The pictures perfectly depict the joy and gratitude that the people of Buppala feel in response to the multitude of ways our school community has transformed their village. The celebration this day was in honor of the 50 goats that were delivered to Buppala children and their families, thanks to the generosity of our school community.

Using Olympus cameras donated by the LeCroix family, Buppala children are learning to 'Frame, Focus, Flash & Follow through' to capture their world. The photos reveal evidence of a rather extraordinary talent. Remember, this is the first time this child has ever used a piece of electronic equipment. We all know the adage: "A picture speaks a thousand words," but the gift of exchanging photos with our pen pals, and sharing these with our community, give each of us access to one another's world that makes this global connection deeply personal. Enjoy the pictures, and remember to slow your pace and take notice.

Gavin Brumfield shared the work Radnor pen pals have done this year to earn a matching grant from the Ardmore Rotary Club. The support from Rotary emphasizes the power of community in teaching students here and abroad that they can make the world a healthier, happier place.
Thank you, Ardmore Rotary, for encouraging our students to develop leadership skills through social entrepreneurship. The 50 goats we delivered to Buppala families is a testament to the impact that sharing and caring can have for people of all ages.
It's amazing what one meal a day can do for a child. She's beautiful, inside and out. And since this photo was taken, Buppala Primary School has taken complete ownership of the lunch program with the garden that SCA Corporation helped us install in 2014. Now, it's time to bolster the nutrition and the opportunities for the neediest students in Buppala with a Goat Giving initiative. Radnor Middle School students, friends and families have raised a herd of 50 goats that I am honored to bring to our pen pals next week. Thank you for your generosity, and thank you for making the world a healthier place.
I look forward to sharing photos and stories of this next adventure in our beautiful collaboration with Buppala Primary School. Follow our exploits at Global Village Connect
Radnor Middle School has proven once again that we are the school with heart in the heart of Wayne! On February 20th, I will be traveling back to our sister school in Uganda with Global Village Connect to deliver 50 milk goats to children from Buppala Primary School. This pay-it-forward goat giving initiative has the capacity to change the health and welfare of multitudes of families.

The collaborative effort of Radnor students will be evident as each goat will be sporting a funky tie-dyed collar and leash crafted by every homeroom in a Schools to Watch activity, during Pen Pal and Popcorn Club on Thursday afternoons, and during MLK Day On of Service.

The goats were donated by Radnor students, friends and families who have managed to transform the village of Buppala over the past seven years. This beautiful pen pal exchange has enriched both of our school communities. Radnor students have learned that they have the capacity to literally raise up a village, and Buppala students are learning that they can sustain an organic garden, develop a small business from their crops, and feed each student a healthy meal every day they attend school.
Many thanks to everyone who has contributed. If you would like to donate (and name!) a goat for this herd, it's not too late. Donate on-line at Global Village Connect and follow the Give a Goat link. Be sure to mention that you're a Radnor supporter. I look forward to sharing pictures and stories from Buppala soon. Much love & gratitude to you all.
The Pen Pal & Popcorn Club members put together a package to send to our
friends at Buppala Primary School, including dozens of biography booklets, 12
cameras donated by Olympus and over 600 toothbrushes donated by Dr. Gerald
Jackson from Berwyn. A very special thank you for these wonderful contributions. The
package will be delivered by our coordinator from Global Village Connect, Joanne
Trangle. She will be visiting the school in February to check on the health of
our garden and to apply for organic certification so the pineapple and banana
crops we planted last summer can be sold on the Fair Trade market. Life for our
pen pals is growing healthier as a direct result of our efforts...right on, RMS!
How exciting is this?! Students at Buppala Primary School are doing a great job with the garden we planted this summer. We just received these photos from Headmaster Bukye Edward. We are on track towards our goal of making Buppala Primary School sustainable and self-sufficient. Since the garden is relatively new and they have only harvested and dried one maize crop to supplement the lunch we have been providing, we will begin gradually decreasing the amount of money designated for lunches and invest more in supporting the gardening efforts.

Summer of the Garden~Pen Pals Rock the World!!!

Goodbye, glorious summer. My classroom is set up and ready for a new crew of middle schoolers and new pen pals. This year I welcome my sixth graders into the Wonder Workshop where we learn to look at the world through the lens of geographers and writers and readers and pen pals. It's gonna be grand. Meanwhile, our garden that SCA helped make possible is growing in Uganda.

To everyone who contributed to this effort, thank you. To everyone who meant to contribute, it's not too late. And to everyone who sees this and is inspired to contribute, well, there's still much to do to bring the Buppala Primary School to a place where they are able to sustain their own lunch program.

A special note of gratitude goes out to Joanne Trangle, founder of Kuchanga Foundation, and a true explorer. Her service-travel journeys to Africa will open your eyes and change your life. Thanks also to our incredible crew: Melanie Bene, Laurie Hruschka, Molly Samson, Hannah Worrell, Catherine Spence-Godin and Ryan Byrd. I don't know about you guys, but I keep thinking of things I'd like to accomplish, and then I go: heck, I helped build a garden in Uganda, I'm sure I can do that! I hope you all feel empowered to conquer your fears and make the world more humane.

With my deep love and gratitude. Let's keep the love growing! Peace, Jodi

Well, the things that we can plant at this time, anyways. Their maize has to be harvested before we can plant the pineapples and apple-banana crops. There's more work to do with soil bands and irrigation channels ( to prevent soil erosion ), but at this point, there are ten avocado trees, ten mangoes, five orange trees, six banana trees, ten paw-paws (papaya trees), three raised beds with cabbage, kale and eggplant, plus the field is marked and measured for the pineapple suckers and apple-banana crop. Intermingled will be matoke, a type of banana plant that's commonly served as a main staple, and maize and beans in the remaining land. Jane, our inspiring and deeply knowlegeable rep from Nogamu, an NGO dedicated to teaching organic farming techniques, was a great teacher and negotiator. She conducted a meeting with the school leaders, and within minutes of concluding the meeting, we had shovels in the ground and were in non-stop motion for two incredibly 'fruitful' weeks at Buppala Primary School.

The garden was made possible by a generous grant from SCA Corporation. They are deeply committed to sustainability, and this garden is intended to create a sustainable source of food and nourishment for generations of students at Buppala Primary School.
None of this would have been possible without my Kampala-based engineer, Moses Bagonza Tindyebwe, and my tour guide and collaborator stateside, Joanne Trangle, the founder of Kuchanga Foundation. They do all of the negotiating, planning and arranging in Uganda, and they are the reason we've been able to be so successful.
They are magnificent. This incredible effort was coordinated by one of my former eighth grade students, Catherine Spence-Godin. She made me so proud. Her gentle spirit encouraged the children at Buppala Primary School, and Radnor Schools, and Valley Forge Middle School, the Gesu School in Philly, and in workshops with Radnor friends and family to experiment with color and create messages expressing their love and gratitude. If you know anyone who's looking for an inspiring art teacher, Catherine is beyond qualified and recently certified.

Tie dying was a thrilling experiment for these students, and the results speak for themselves. The school looks like a hippie encampment now. The Peace Flags and the the tiles we erected two years ago are bright reminders of the potential of kids to create beautiful things. When you look at the flags, it's often impossible to distinguish whether they were tie-dyed by a Buppala kid or a Radnor kid; a P3 student or an eighth grader. Each flag is unique and perfect, and, altogether, you can't help but smile when you see them flying in the breeze.

The images of the Buppala kids admiring the flags after they were hung speaks volumes. The flags look like jewels inviting the students into their garden. This was big. Thank you, Radnor Educational Foundation, for sponsoring this collaborative outdoor art installation.

There was a closing ceremony where the children sang and danced, and the community laughed as we tried to sing along: When we are born we have a learning mind, a learning mind, a learning mind. When we are born we have a learning mind. We always learn from our environment! There were words of gratitude, and I read the proclamation that Dr. Stevenson wrote, formally pronouncing Buppala Primary as our sister school. This was a deeply significant gesture; perhaps more than we realize. The villagers applauded and whooped several times as I read the framed document. They take us at our word: we are their family. Forever.
Family means many different things to different people, and perhaps we use the term recklessly, but in Uganda, family is everything. We try to instill that value here at RMS, and sometimes we do a great job at it. This work with our pen pals is teaching me a great deal about what it means to take care of one another. The difference in the health of the children there is immediately visible since my last visit two years ago when we installed the latrine. Daily lunch has made a HUGE impact. Kids who were worryingly thin last visit look healthy now, and attendance has also improved. The headmaster says their ability to concentrate is also noticeably better.
Joanne's business is all about service coupled with adventure, and she makes sure to blend in thrilling excursions to beautiful sights around the country. We worked at the school during the week and stayed in a lovely hotel about a half hour away. It was a comfortable place with good food and plenty of Nile bee-uh and Fanta, and it was great to come back to the same spot. Our first weekend excursion we visited Sipi Falls, waking up in a banta on the side of a mountain to a breathtaking view. Then our guide Patrick led us up to the waterfalls on a rigorous hike that the locals scamper up and down on a daily basis.

Re-entry is always difficult, and I try desperately to hold on to some of what Uganda has given me. Last time I wanted to remember to practice patience, and this trip was a good reminder of that. This time I think I want to practice sustainability. I want to try to sustain this relationship, even though it's annoying sometimes, sort of like your family members, but you're stuck with them for life. My parents celebrated their 60th anniversary this summer, and they're a great model of sustainability for me. They make it look easy, though. I know this won't be easy, but I'm gonna try and stick it out, and I'm going to trust that when Anthony wrote a proclamation that said Buppala Primary is our sister school, he meant they're our family in the best sense of the word. So, I thank you for sharing this journey with me and our students and alumni and community, I beg you to help sustain the connection that hundreds of students and friends have initiated over the past five years, and as my daddy always proclaims at every family gathering, "L'chaim. To life!"Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15779489829207500095noreply@blogger.com1
